"Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised." Proverbs 31:30
What does this mean? Does this mean that we are not to care about our appearance? Or does this mean that our relationship with Christ is what makes us who we are?
As Christians, we are to be sure that our inner being is right, holy and in line with Christ before we are to concern ourselves with our outer image. I strongly believe that our outer appearance is definitely a factor when it comes to drawing people to us, however, it is not what keeps them. What keeps people drawn to the Christ in us is just that... CHRIST IN US!
Vanity is defined as excessive pride in one's appearance, qualities, abilities, achievements. Does this sound Christ-like? Absolutely not! The Bible clearly teaches us to be humble.
*Proverbs 11:2 || When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
*Philippians 2:1-3 || If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, (2) then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. (3) Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
Now the question is: If God is not into us being into ourselves, how do we explain the idea of loving ourselves enough to maintain our appearance and even take a liking to style and fashion?
Well to address the first part of that question, maintaining a healthy body and presentable image is a part of our Christian duty!
I Corinthians 6:19-20 || Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within
you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought
with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Romans 12:1-2 || I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present
your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is
your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern
what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
I Corinthians 3:17 || If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.
Now as far as style and fashion, that all is a part of the way God created us. It is okay to embrace ones gift of style, art, etc. God has given us the beauties of this earth to enjoy, embrace and appreciate. It only becomes a problem when we indulge to the point that it distracts us from Christ. When our admiration turns into an obsession that no longer represents the God we serve, we have then allowed ourselves to step out against His original plan for us to enjoy what He has given us.
Love God. Live Healthy. Style Always.
